Randal J. Thomas, M.D., director of Mayo Clinic’s Cardiovascular Health Clinic, and colleagues found that patients who participate in cardiac rehabilitation after having heart interventions such as angioplasty, stents and clot-busting drugs have a 45 percent lower mortality rate.
The research team studied data from more than 2,300 patients between 1994 and 2008, and recently published the results in Circulation.
Only about 40 percent of patients in the study participated in cardiac rehabilitation. These findings are particularly important for interventional cardiologists, Dr. Thomas says, because encouraging patients to pursue cardiac rehab after their procedure can potentially save more lives than previously thought.

I had a heart attack in November bc of blockage. I was in terrific shape swimming 100 laps in olympic pool every other day. Being in shape has nothing to do with blockage. Had stents in two arteries. Prescription by cardio Cedars Sinai Rehab Cardio. Cedars terrific carido unit, and terrific rehab which is located adjacent to Hospital. Insurance covered rehab but now that insurance time is over (I think they had three or four months)(there was also a copay) I will pay for Cedars rehab to watch me exercise in controlled and safe environment. Worked out on treadmill and on bike, all hooked up. Also recovered to point where now swimming again back up to 100 laps as well (outside of Cedars). Now will continue to work out in safe environment with limited hook up. The fact that exercise treadmill and bike takes place in Rehab brings peace of mind.
Very Reasonable amount per month now at Rehab at Cedars; peanuts in comparison to benefit and safety net. Great benefit offered by Cedars.
Just as there are a number of reasons why heart blockages occur, there are also a number of reasons why cardiac rehabilitation is beneficial in persons with heart blockages. Among other things, patients in cardiac rehabilitation programs receive medically supervised exercise training and nutritional therapy, are guided regarding their sustained use of important preventive medications, and enjoy the safety, security, and support that comes from close follow-up by medical professionals.
As described in the blog post, it’s important to remember to continue long-term with the important principles of prevention that are provided during the 3 months or so of early outpatient cardiac rehabilitation. Some people elect to continue with a long-term exercise program offered through some cardiac rehabilitation programs (sometimes called a Phase 3 or Phase 4 program). Others exercise on their own, or through a local health club. However one decides to do his or her long-term exercise program, it is critically important to continue to follow-up with a healthcare provider to make sure that appropriate prevention goals continue to be met in the long-term.
