New England Journal of Medicine article explores mild cognitive impairment


In the June 2011 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, Ronald C. Petersen, M.D., Ph.D. with the Department of Neurology presents a case vignette highlighting mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Dr. Petersen presents evidence supporting various strategies, reviews formal guidelines when they exist and provides clinical recommendations. The Alzheimer’s Association and the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health recently published updated guidelines defining Alzheimer’s disease and MCI. The guidelines identify two new phases of the disease: presymptomatic and mildly symptomatic but predementia. Dr. Petersen discusses the significance of the new stage of predementia.
